Every Wash: Leave the Door Open
After each cycle, leave the door and detergent drawer slightly open so the drum can dry out. This is the single easiest habit for preventing musty smells and mould around the door seal.
Monthly: Run an Empty Hot Cycle
Once a month, run an empty cycle on the hottest setting (or use a dedicated drum-clean cycle if your machine has one) to clear detergent residue and limescale build-up inside the drum and pipework.
Monthly: Clean the Detergent Drawer and Door Seal
Detergent and fabric softener residue builds up in the drawer and around the rubber door seal. A quick wipe-down monthly prevents blockages and bad smells.
Every Few Months: Check the Drain Filter
Most automatic washing machines have an access panel with a small drain filter that traps coins, buttons and lint. Clearing it every few months helps prevent drainage faults and pump strain.
Once or Twice a Year: Book a Professional Check
A technician visit once or twice a year — more often for a heavily used machine — covers what a home routine can't: checking hoses for wear, testing the drum bearing, inspecting the motor and confirming the machine is level and draining correctly.
Signs You Shouldn't Wait for the Next Scheduled Check
If you notice a burning smell, water pooling under the machine, unusual noise, or an error code that keeps returning, it's worth booking a visit rather than waiting for your next routine service.
