A washing machine that fills and washes but won't spin is one of the most common calls we get. Here are the usual causes, starting with the simplest.
1. Overloaded or Unbalanced Load
Too many clothes, or a single heavy item like a duvet, can throw the drum off balance. Most machines have a safety sensor that stops spinning if the load isn't balanced. Try redistributing the load or washing heavy items separately.
2. Worn Drive Belt
On some machines, a rubber belt connects the motor to the drum. Over time this belt can wear, stretch or snap, so the drum fills and washes but doesn't spin. This is a straightforward part to replace.
3. Faulty Door Lock
Most automatic washing machines won't spin unless the door lock sensor confirms the door is properly closed and locked. A faulty lock mechanism can prevent spinning even when the door looks closed.
4. Drain Pump Blockage
If the machine can't drain the water properly, it usually won't proceed to the spin cycle. A blocked drain pump filter or hose is a common and often simple fix.
5. Motor or Control Board Fault
If none of the above apply, the issue may be with the motor itself or the electronic control board. This is best diagnosed by a technician with the right testing equipment.

If redistributing the load and checking the door don't help, or if you hear a burning smell or unusual noise during the spin attempt, it's time to book a professional diagnosis rather than keep running the machine.
